We would need more information.. first though,
If you started with an unknown torrent or obscure source for the game start over.
The gamespy patch replaces 4 files. I recommend using this after installing battlefield.

Your memory
Anything possibly relevant such as other applications running, error messages, ect.

Your version of Battlefield 1942 -> CD (used to run on this computer just fine with same graphics and sound cards.
Your operating system Win7
Your graphics card ATI Radeon HD4550
Your memory 4GB
Anything possibly relevant such as other applications running, error messages, ect. no other apps running, no error message, if I click on a desktop shortcut it asks if it is ok to run unknown publisher. when I click yes it checks the cd and then nothing happens. If it starts from loading the cd it opens the front little screen. I click Play and the same behavior happens.

You have never patched? Using a CD in the drive bay ?

That patch should defeat CD authentication. The authentication used had an exploit and is disabled by windows updates.
