High Ping

I've been having this problem for quite a while.
It's self-explanatory really. I've been playing with a 200+ ping for a while now and don't really understand why. Today, I got kicked twice for high ping when it rocketed to +400.
I've tried power cycling (is that what it's called?) my modem, but there's really been very little difference.
The confusing things are as follows:
- I used to get a better ping when I had a 2 mb connection. I now have 8mb
- Every single UK/European player I see has a ping ranging around 110 - 150
- My ping on CQ is virtually always better than TDM (which really makes no sense to me). I can go <200 on CQ, but rarely on TDM unless there's about 10 players in the server.

Any suggestions?

I think, if swingkid doesn't mind, I'll add my question here. Before I went away for vacation I was pinging around 80 on moon servers (TDM and CQ). Now I'm jumping all over the place - btw. 120-150 and yesterday I got kicked for high ping.

Weird thing is that it isn't happening on other servers.

No one used my comp while I was gone.
I have no new programs.
I've defragged, got rid of temp files, ran spy/virus/adware scans recently...
I unplugged my modem for a bit - which is I thought was how you power cycled.

First thing to do is a traceroute and post the results here. At a command prompt type 'tracert 64.34.179.229' (without the quotes of course) and put the results in this thread so we can have a look-see.

I'm always such a noob ....

I went to start - then run - and in the prompt box put 'tracert 64.34.179.229' - it started running it - got to 14 or so and then dissappered. How do I save it so I can paste it here and I am I doing this right?

And thank you in advance yet AGAIN catfish.

one way is to go to start > run and run 'command.com' - just means for windows to bring up a command window. Alternately you can go to start > all programs > accessories > command prompt to start it. Then you can type in the tracert command and it won't disappear once it's finished.

Once it's done you'll also probably need to go to click on the little c:\ icon in the top left corner to bring down a menu, go to Edit, then Mark to let you highlight, then the same thing again for copy.

KatManDu told me about this product, it's a visual tracert program and you can download a 30 day demo. http://www.visualroute.com/

I don't really see anything wrong in this trace. The 100+ ping starts at hop 5 (AT&T).
Can you do another one of the CQ server? It is at 64.34.180.19.

Look at the first one there.
If you are running ADSL, it helps to set your MTU to 1492 instead of standard 1500.
It should/could reduce some of the packet loss you have.
Change it, reboot and trace again.

Yeah I know . but no
I have played with the kind of stuff when I had Satillite Connection but it doesn't work that way for this connection.
Something going on , something has changed over last couple weeks.
I just play bf2 and I come to forum read stuff , check the weather .
I could see if it was malware , grayware, virus and solar flares but none of these things going on.
I monitor through traceroute when issue arrive . Usualy I blame my ISP but it not them for a change.
I wish I saved every image I had give you some history.
I always believe my connection was sensitive to changes. Those last 2 hops are dropping 90% packets, maybe they
are being flooded . <_<
Maybe my packets have a funny taste . blah
I just making fun of a frustrating situation.

I have a Wireless internet Xplornet , uses RF spectrum unlike a cell phone uses IR .. some one told me that.
It uses a module on top of the house send to a tower which is connected to a Broadband line.
THis tower is 3 miles away from me which is a fairly close distance then some.
Anyways not here nor there , Ping has gone to hell and I dont know why.
Seem like servers are rejecting my connection . least thats how I see it but im no techy what the heck do I know.
Want to know about Plastic Injection moulds ? lol that I know lots about

Aeryn - I did some reading over at dslreports and it looks like there's a common complaint that comcast has been screwing with their routing in your area, switching to different backbone providers, etc. which is screwing with people's pings. No suggested solution unfortunately other than to cross your fingers they get it sorted out soon. It looks like there isn't anything wrong with your computer or connection, it's all on comcast's backend. You could try gamerail and see if it helps, it's free right now while it's in beta testing. I've run it on two computers and had no issues, I found it reduced my latency some but not my ping. Of course geographically I'm not in an area to really take advantage of it. <_< I believe all of Wolf's data centers that we're in are on the gamerail network so it's probably worth a try.

http://gamerail.com/

SwingKid - I don't see any issues in your routing, in fact it looks like you're being peered onto Saavis in London and stay on their backbone all the way to the data center where the server is. It almost sounds like another application might be maxing out your bandwidth to cause those delays, I'd make sure that nothing else is using up your upload capacity. Maybe another european player can suggest something?

Thanks for your support Catfish.

I got Gamerail nice program . I bet it be great for most people.
Just not me <_<
It took 9 hops instead of 19 . Cool eh !
its just those last darn servers its the same ones on my image I posted.
To bad the can shake those ones.

I guess I will just keep checking through TraceRoute see if anything changes.
So on that note I wont be playing much , just don't take my [REG] away.
It will probably make a few Reg's happy I not there messing up there game.

It looks like they did some servicing on there back bone eh .
I did a trace route and saw 8 new hop addresses.
I did see the last 3 hops still dropping packets , but still better then the last 8.
So I went and played some, sure enuf game play seem to normal .
I cross my finger and toes and it paided off .. Woot !
Hope it stays that way or even improves some more.

I 'm back baby !
